Case Study: Transforming a Multi-Use Venue with EDC

The Challenge
The client approached us with the need for a highly adaptable audio solution to serve a multi-use venue. The space had to accommodate various audience layouts, from full-room events to intimate presentations in front of a video wall. Compounding the complexity were significant acoustic challenges, including a high reverberation time (RT60 exceeding 6 seconds) and poor speech intelligibility, making clear communication nearly impossible in its current state.

The Problems

  • High Reverberation: The reflective surfaces created a highly reverberant environment, severely affecting sound clarity.
  • Low Intelligibility: Speech was difficult to understand, hampering the effectiveness of presentations and events.
  • Multi-Use Requirements: The venue needed flexible coverage for different audience configurations, from large gatherings to small, focused events.
  • Seamless Coverage Transitions: The client required a system capable of dynamically switching between audience setups without compromising clarity or coverage.

The Solutions
Leveraging the advanced beam-shaping capabilities of EDC technology, we designed a system using a combination of SQ90, SS3, and SC60SL speakers. The modular design and software-defined nature of these models allowed us to tailor the system precisely to the venue’s needs.

  • High STI Performance: We achieved exceptional speech intelligibility (STI over 0.85) despite the challenging acoustics, ensuring clear communication across all audience configurations.
  • Flexible Coverage: Adaptive Coverage Control enabled seamless transitions between modes, providing even sound distribution for both large events and smaller, intimate gatherings.
  • One Point Source Technology: The EDC speakers worked cohesively as a single point source, drastically reducing reflections and ensuring consistent sound throughout the venue, even in its most reverberant zones.
  • Future-Proof Design: The software-defined nature of the system allows the client to reconfigure audio setups easily, adapting to evolving requirements without needing hardware changes.

The Outcome
The client was thrilled with the results, expressing disbelief at the achieved STI performance:
"I would not have believed the STI performance if proved in advance."

The venue now delivers intimate, close-sounding audio, transforming what once sounded like a large, reverberant space into an experience akin to listening in a lounge room. The evenness of coverage and the ability to seamlessly adapt to different modes of use have exceeded the client’s expectations, making the space more versatile and impactful for all types of events.
